Haworthia: characteristics of species and features of cultivation

Havortian clan (Haworthias) belongs to the Liliaceae family (Liliáceas), if we adhere to the classical classification, and according to phylogenetic haworthia belongs to the asphodel family (Asphodelaceas).

This genus is very numerous. Haworthia, according to various estimates, refers to 70 - 90 species of plants endemic to South Africa. Since the plant belongs to the same family as Aloe, they live in approximately the same environment and are very similar in appearance. The genus of these plants is named after the botanist from England Adrian Hayworth. Henri Duvall called it that in 1809.

Bayer M. B. divided the genus into 3 subgenus, according to the structure of flowers and type of flowering:

  1. Haworthia (Haworthia; 45 species belong to it). This group includes species: Haworthia zantneriana, Haworthia pulchella, Haworthia arachnoidea, Haworthia truncata, Haworthia retusa.
  2. Hexangulares (Hexangulares; 17 species belong to this subgenus). This group includes Haworthia scabra,
  3. Haworthia coarctata, Haworthia venosa, Haworthia fasciata and Haworthia attenuata,
  4. Robustipendiculares (Robustipedunculares; 5 species belong to it). This group is represented by Haworthia pumila, Haworthia minima and Haworthia marginata.

Haworthia is a perennial succulent plant with an unassuming appearance, 3-10 cm in diameter. The height of the plant is less than 20 cm. The leaves of almost all varieties form rosettes. Most often, the leaves are lanceolate, sometimes they are wrinkled. Sometimes they have transverse stripes on the back. Some of them on the front side have longitudinal marks that shine through like windows.

Growing succulents

How to grow haworthia so that a cute, almost exotic plant will delight us with its original appearance? It will be difficult to do this only if you spend little time on it and do not follow the basic rules of cultivation. If you follow agricultural technology and provide the plant with maximum opportunities for development, you will get an excellent result.

Types of Haworthia

First, I would like to highlight the type of plant that you will most conveniently grow.

Among these plants, you can notice those species, the existence of which they had not previously expected. This is what distinguishes succulent from others.

So, the most famous and popular types of haworthia.

Striped

A perennial herbaceous plant that consists of dense basal rosettes and does not have a trunk. The leaves are distinguished by originality, and almost exclusive appearance they give a bulge on the surface, merging into transverse stripes of white color. The upper part of the leaves of this species is smooth.

The flowering of succulent is not particularly attractive, and it is not necessary when there is such a serious appearance.

Twisty

In other words, it’s just a winding aloe, which is seriously different from the pot plant that we used to see on our own windows. A small trunk, short leaves, bulges and even small “warts” - all this makes the plant even more unique.

Haworthia: features of landing and care

Mosaic

Chess haworthia, as it is also called, is a virtually stemless plant that forms a basal rosette with very pretty leaves. The spiral arrangement, interesting shape and sharpness at the edges, curvature outward and incredible pattern on the surface are the main distinguishing qualities of the plant that will decorate your “garden on the windowsill” is very simple.

A huge number of haworthia species can be considered for hours, and not only because of the large number, but also because succulents are very attractive and the time of their study flies unnoticed.

In addition to the several types indicated by us, we suggest that you pay attention to other equally interesting ones: Haworthia Kleikaya, Limolistnaya, Reinvardta, Pearl, Terkovidnaya, Spider-like and others.

Carefully studying each species, you will be very surprised, since some plants are so different from their relatives that it is even impossible to attribute them to a single estate right away.

Plant care

If you decide to grow haworthia and propagate it at home, you need to know a whole set of requirements that will have to be constantly observed for the proper development of succulents.

Temperature

It turns out that moderate temperature is most suitable for haworthia throughout the entire warm season. It is also noteworthy that our plant prefers serious drops during this period. If we talk about the winter period, then the temperature should be seriously different from the summer (+ 22 + 26 ° С) and be set at + 11 + 12 ° С. But it’s good that these are not limiting indicators, as the succulent normally undergoes a temperature of + 18 ° С.

Lighting

The plant prefers good, even bright lighting, but not in direct sunlight. It will be most correct to place the pot on the east or west window, but it is very undesirable to install it on the north side, as the haworthia will quickly lose its decorative appearance.

Watering and humidity

Perhaps we will start with moisture, and immediately say that the plant has no special requirements for this factor. The main thing is to constantly ventilate the room in the summer, and sometimes in the cold period, since the haworthia needs clean and fresh air.

If you raise the issue of watering, then you will need prepared water, settled and soft. Watering will rarely need to be done, only to moisten the topsoil in the pot. In winter, watering can be practically stopped, moistening the soil about 1 time in a couple of months.

Soil and fertilizer

It will be correct to use a special soil mixture for succulents for planting and growing haworthia, but you can always prepare the mixture yourself. You will need to take sand with crumb brick, mix it with peat and humus, leaf and turf ground.

Fertilizer is produced with a special compound that can always be purchased at wildlife stores (fertilizers for succulents). It should be applied along with watering, strictly in the summer, 1 time per month.

How to transplant haworthia

If it comes time to transplant a small and pretty plant, this process is most correctly carried out in the spring, be sure to choose a slightly larger pot for transplanting.

There are few recommendations, the main thing is the correct soil mixture and the shape of the pot with high-quality drainage.

Breeding succulents

We recommend reproduction by daughter sockets - the easiest and most correct way. In this case, the sockets are carefully cut off or simply detached from the mother plant, but always with a part of the root system.

You can plant the plant and in separate sheets, which are cut, dusted with ash or coal and dried for 2-3 days. Then there is a landing in the sand or loose soil. The first watering after planting - only after 15-20 days, when the cut gives roots.

Although some species differ in certain claims to agricultural technology, in practice, we found out that growing haworthy will not be any problem.
